Puppy training pads: how to approach house training

A new puppy at home is fantastic, but house training requires patience and the right approach. Training pads provide a fixed, recognisable spot where your puppy is allowed to go. Place the pad on a hard floor, not too far from the sleeping area. Bring your puppy to it after sleeping, eating and playing, as those are the moments they need to go most often. Reward every successful visit to the pad with a training treat and praise.

Choose pads with a super absorbent core that quickly absorbs and retains moisture. A leak-proof bottom layer protects your floor and prevents unpleasant surprises. Larger pads (60x60 cm or more) offer a bigger target area, which is helpful at the start when your puppy is still learning to aim. Count on 4-6 pads per day for a young puppy. As your puppy gets older and can hold it longer, usage decreases.

Gradually move the pad towards the door once your puppy uses it consistently. After a few weeks, you can move the pad outside and eventually remove it altogether. Training pads are also useful for older dogs with incontinence or dogs recovering from surgery. Also check out our training accessories for more tools to help with your dog's education.

Frequently asked questions puppy training pads for house training

From what age should I use puppy training pads?
From the moment your puppy comes home (usually 8 weeks). Training pads help with house training and protect your floors. They are especially useful at night and when you cannot go outside immediately.
How do I teach my puppy to use a training pad?
Place the pad in a fixed spot. Put your puppy on it after sleeping, eating and playing. Reward immediately when they go on the pad. Gradually move the pad closer to the door and eventually outside.
How many training pads do I need per day?
For a young puppy, count on 4 to 6 pads per day. As your puppy learns, this decreases. Puppies usually need to go after sleeping, eating, drinking and playing.
Are training pads also suitable for older dogs?
Yes, training pads are also useful for older dogs with incontinence, sick dogs recovering from surgery, or dogs that are temporarily unable to go outside.
Can I use washable training pads instead of disposable?
