Dog Bed for Large Dogs:
spacious, sturdy and comfortable
Large dogs deserve a bed that matches their size. At Bopets you will find dog beds in XL and XXL with sturdy filling that won't sag, so your Labrador, Shepherd or other large dog sleeps comfortably and well supported.
XL and XXL beds with orthopaedic core
A too-small dog bed for a large dog leads to uncomfortable sleep, stiff joints and restlessness. That is why we offer XL dog beds and XXL models with internal dimensions up to 120 cm, so even the largest dogs can lie fully stretched out. A spacious large dog bed is essential as a bed for large breeds like Labrador, Shepherd or Bernese Mountain Dog. Many of our large beds have an orthopaedic core of memory foam, essential for heavy dogs that need extra joint support. Besides comfort, durability is a must: large dogs wear out a bed faster. That is why we choose sturdy fabrics, reinforced seams and removable covers that can take a beating. The Fantail dog beds are particularly popular in this segment: stain-resistant premium fabrics, 10 cm thick foam and sizes up to 110 cm. See our size guide for large breeds ↓
The right dog bed for large breeds
Large dogs put more pressure on their sleeping spot than small breeds. That makes the choice of bed extra important: the right model prevents joint wear, offers security and lasts for years.
What size dog bed for large dogs?
The golden rule: measure your dog from nose to tail base and add 15–20 cm. For large breeds that means:
| Breed | Avg. body length | Recommended size |
|---|---|---|
| Labrador Retriever | 55–60 cm | 80–90 cm |
| Golden Retriever | 55–60 cm | 80–90 cm |
| Belgian Malinois | 60–65 cm | 90–100 cm |
| German Shepherd | 60–65 cm | 90–100 cm |
| Bernese Mountain Dog | 65–70 cm | 100–110 cm |
| Rottweiler | 60–68 cm | 90–110 cm |
When in doubt, always choose one size larger. A dog hanging over the edge sleeps uncomfortably and strains its joints.
Why orthopaedic memory foam matters for large dogs
A dog over 30 kg puts considerable pressure on its sleeping spot. Standard polyester filling sags within months, leaving your dog on the hard surface. Memory foam retains its resilience for years and provides therapeutic support for:
The Fantail Snooze with lowered entry is particularly suitable: large dogs with stiff joints step in and out effortlessly.
Sturdiness and durability
When choosing an XXL dog bed, look for:
Premium upholstery fabric (like Fantail) is up to 5x more wear-resistant than standard polyester.
Double-stitched seams prevent tearing with heavy dogs.
Non-slip bottom so the bed doesn't slide when your dog jumps in.
Large dogs bring in more dirt. Stain-resistant fabrics are easier to keep clean.

Frequently asked questions about dog beds for large dogs
Which dog bed is best for a Labrador?
A Labrador needs a bed with an internal size of at least 80–90 cm. Choose a model with orthopaedic memory foam, as Labradors are prone to hip dysplasia. A bed with a washable cover is extra practical, as Labradors shed a lot.
How big should an XXL dog bed be?
An XXL dog bed has an internal size of 100 cm or more. This is suitable for dogs heavier than 35–40 kg, such as Bernese Mountain Dogs, Rottweilers and Great Danes. Always measure your dog to determine the right size.
Won't a dog bed break quickly with a large dog?
That depends on the quality. Cheap beds with thin fabric and single seams do break quickly. Choose a bed with premium fabric, reinforced seams and thick foam, which will last 3 to 5 years, even with heavy breeds.
Can a large dog bed go in the washing machine?
The full bed usually not, but the removable cover can. With Fantail beds you unzip the cover and wash it at 30 °C in the machine. The foam itself does not need washing.
