Toys by age

Your cat's needs change as they grow older. Match the toys to their life stage:

🐾
Kitten (0-12 months)
Kittens are tirelessly playful. Choose lightweight, soft toys they can catch and bite: small toy mice, soft balls and short wand toys. Avoid toys with small loose parts, choking hazard.
🐱
Adult cat (1-10 years)
Adult cats need 15-30 minutes of active play daily. Combine interactive toys (wand toys, feather teasers) with independent toys (jingle balls, catnip cushions) and a cat tree.
😸
Senior cat (10+ years)
Older cats are less active but still need mental stimulation. Food puzzles, catnip toys and gentle wand sessions keep them sharp without overexertion. Play short but regularly.
🏠
Indoor cat
Indoor cats miss the stimulation of the outside world and need extra toys. Invest in a varied selection: wand toys, puzzles, catnip and a cat tree for climbing and scratching.

What is catnip and is it safe?

Catnip (Nepeta cataria) is a herb from the mint family that triggers a euphoric response in about 70% of cats: rolling, rubbing, jumping and playing. It is completely safe and non-addictive. The effect lasts 5 to 15 minutes, after which your cat becomes temporarily immune. Kittens under 6 months usually do not respond to catnip yet.

How much playtime does your cat need?

Cats need at least 15 to 30 minutes of active playtime daily, preferably spread over two or three short sessions. Interactive play with a wand toy or feather teaser is the most effective and also strengthens the bond with your cat. Supplement with independent toys your cat can use on their own.

Combine cat toys with a cat tree and bed

Create the perfect cat corner by combining toys with a sturdy cat tree and a comfortable cat bed. This way your cat has everything in one place: playing, scratching and resting. Rotate toys regularly to keep things interesting.

Frequently asked questions cat toys

What cat toys are best for indoor cats?
Interactive toys like feather wands, laser pointers and puzzle feeders keep indoor cats mentally stimulated. Rotate toys regularly to maintain interest. Provide at least 2 to 3 play sessions per day.
Is catnip safe for cats?
Yes, catnip is completely safe and non-addictive. About 50 to 70% of cats respond to it. Kittens under 6 months usually do not react yet. The effect lasts about 10 to 15 minutes.
Which toy is best for a kitten?
Lightweight toys they can bat around: small balls, mice toys and soft toys. Avoid toys with small parts that could be swallowed. Feather wands are great for interactive play.
How often should I play with my cat?
At least 15 to 20 minutes of interactive play per day, spread over 2 to 3 sessions. Active breeds and kittens need more. Play before meals mimics the natural hunt-eat-sleep cycle.
Are laser pointers safe for cats?
Yes, but never shine directly in the eyes. Always end a laser session by directing the dot to a physical toy or treat, so your cat gets the satisfaction of a real catch.
What is the best puzzle toy for cats?
Start simple: a treat ball or food maze. Gradually increase difficulty. Puzzle feeders slow down eating and provide mental stimulation, reducing boredom and behavioural issues.
