The right transport for your cat
Most cats are not keen travellers. A familiar, comfortable transport solution makes the difference between a stressful and a calm journey. Whether it is an annual vet visit or a longer holiday trip: with the right preparation and the right carrier, everything goes more smoothly.
Which type of carrier suits your situation?
| Type | Suitable for | Key points |
|---|---|---|
| Hard carrier | Vet, car, plane | Sturdy, easy to clean, IATA-approved for flights |
| Soft carrier bag | Short city trips, public transport | Lightweight, foldable, less durable |
| Cat backpack | Walking, cycling | Hands-free, window for your cat, maximum weight limited |
| Travel basket (wicker/fabric) | Short distances | Stylish, less sturdy, harder to clean |
Choosing the right size
Measure your cat from nose to tail base and add 10 cm. The carrier should be tall enough for your cat to sit upright. An average house cat (4–5 kg) fits in a carrier of 48×32×28 cm. For flights: check dimensions with your airline (IATA standard: max. 55×40×23 cm in the cabin).
Cat harness
A cat harness is an H-harness or vest that closes around the chest and shoulders. Advantages over a collar:
Start by letting your cat get used to the harness indoors. Let your cat wear it for a few days without a lead before going outside. Reward calm behaviour with treats to build a positive association.
